The Chocolate Factory

As nearly everything’s normally shut down on Sundays, me and my family occasionally like to visit a little seaside resort nearby called Eckernförde on those days. The shops there are allowed to be opened because of a special regulation for such resorts here in Germany.

The city certainly doesn't offer a ton of different stores, but I really enjoy browsing around the little shops without the intention of necessarily buying anything.
Anyway, there is a very special place in Eckernförde that is definitely worth stopping by - especially for everyone that has a sweet tooth like I do! The place I’m talking about is in fact a candy factory (in German 'Bonbonkocherei') where you can see how the candies are made and also purchase a ton of different sweets. Although I should warn you: Especially on Sundays it’s really busy in there!

However, this place also includes a separate chocolate factory in an outbuilding  which I stepped into as it was much less crowded. And let’s be honest: I prefer chocolate over wine gum and hard candies anyway.

For me, it’s always interesting to see which types of chocolate they have to offer when I go in there, as those tend to  vary throughout the different seasons. For instance, you can get ‘apple-cinnamon’ in winter and something like ‘strawberry’ or ‘orange’ in spring and summer.
All of the different chocolates just look so nice and appetizing next to each other! ^_^

The store totally awakens my inner child: You can grab a little bag and a gripper, walk around looking at all the chocolates and pick those that appeal to you. In the end, a nice woman weighs the bag and you pay the respective price for your chocolates.

These are the chocolates that I ended up getting:

I pretty much liked all of them, but the 'dark chocolate & seasalt' one is probably my favourite. There seems to be something about the sweet + salty combination that just always appeals to me!

Do you also have a favourite 'Sunday-place' that you like to visit? I'd love to know your insider tips!

  1. Omg I can't believe this kind of place exists!!!! Too bad it's tooo far from where I am.

It looks like a kid's idea of heaven brought to life. I'm not too much of a kid at heart, but I do love me some chocolate! I like that they're presented in such a way that you just go around the area and start picking random pieces of each variant til you fill up a baggie, I suppose.

Dark chocolate + seasalt sounds like a delicious combination! I would try one too. :3

    1. I totally agree, this is pretty much the place I've been dreaming of as a child (and maybe still do, haha)!
I noticed that lately many different brands started doing chocolates with some kind of salt in them , so maybe you could actually find something similar to my favourite pick ☺

  3. Do you want to know a little secret? Salt makes sweet things taste sweeter. That's why people put salt on their pineappale, for example. I don't remember the chemics behind it, but it basically enables you to taste more of the sweetness. That's why sweet & salty chocolates are so delicious. :D
That being said, I totally want to go to that chocolate factory and buy allll the chocolates (and I'm not even a big fan of chocolate. These look to hard to resist). From the ones you got, I'd love to try orange one. Have you ever tried ginger chocolate? It's my favourite kind. Preferably from Hussel or Lindt.
My favourite places to be on sundays are either my bed or a flea market. Have to be honest though, I prefer my bed xD
Thank you for sharing this wonderful entry ♥

    1. I think I've actually heard of this salt + sugar theory before! It kind of does make sense - I still remember my mother telling me to always put a pinch of salt into every sweet pastry as it's supposed to really enhance the whole flavour ^_^
I haven't tried ginger chocolate yet, though! Lindt is actually one of my favourite brands for chocolate but I think I haven't seen this flavour before, so I should really have a look out for it ☺
Also, I guess my bed ranks second on my list of favourite Sunday-places :D
I'm glad to hear you appreciate this post! ♥♥

  6. Yes, the shops being closed on Sunday is a little bit annoying, I get jealous every time when I hear people from other countries talk about their weekend shop browsing.
